What to Expect

The Panama Canal watershed is surrounded by lush rainforest and this program gives you the opportunity to go on different day trips to all the National Parks in the area, from the comfortable hub of your Panama City hotel.

From the small Metropolitan National Park, with only 256 Hectares of protected land, to the biggest one in the region, the Chagres National Park with 135,000 hectares, you will be able to enjoy wildlife and the rich biodiversity of Panama in four of the most important National Parks of the Republic.

Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival Day

Upon arrival at Tocumen International Airport, a Dynamo Travel agent will be waiting for you, as you exit Customs, to welcome you and organize your transfer to your hotel in Panama City, a 25-minute ride, approximately.

Day 2. The Met and the Locks

Today you will have an early start to enjoy nature as you hike through the only wildlife park in Panama within the boundaries of our metropolitan capital. Only fifteen minutes from downtown Panama, the Metropolitan Natural Park is home to a great variety of birds, plants, mammals and much more.

After an interesting two hour hike, we will drive you to the Miraflores Locks to witness the Panama Canal in full operation, as the northbound ship convoy passes through its locks, on their way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic.

After this interesting visit, we will drive through the former Panama Canal Zone to our next destination, the Colonial city of Panama (UNESCO).  An area selected by the Spaniards to rebuilt the city of Panama after the famous attack of pirate Henry Morgan, in 1671. 

After enjoying a nice Panamanian style lunch, enjoy a walking tour through its narrow streets, admiring the rich mixture of architectural styles, which depict the interesting history of this area, and

Day 3. The amazing Emberas

On this morning, our guide will pick you up at your hotel and drive you to Lake Alajuela, located in Chagres National Park. Upon arrival at the port of Corotu, you will be met by the Emberas, who will guide you to their traditional dugout canoes to start your journey, through beautiful and lush rainforest, up to the small indigenous community, nestled in this protected area of over 135,000 hectares, home of 40% of Panama’s flora and fauna.

Enjoy beautiful sceneries as you navigate the Chagres River to reach this community.  Once there you will be able to discover this highly interesting and well preserved culture of this knowledgeable and friendly people who will amaze you with their art, their music, their food, but especially with their warmth.

Day 4. The Transcontinental Panama Railway and the Caribbean side of the Canal

Today you will start your day with a one-hour train ride along the shores of the Panama Canal and through the beautiful rainforest that surrounds this important waterway.  The train drives by the Canal locks and the lake and you may be able to spot monkeys, toucans or sloths on the surrounding trees plus huge crocodiles and giant Panamax vessels in its waters. 

Upon arrival on the Caribbean side of the country, you will enjoy an up-close visit of the new Panama Canal locks at Agua Clara and witness Neo Panamax vessels navigating through this new locks system, part of one of the most important and significant mega projects in our history, the expansion of the Panama Canal for world commerce.  

After this, you will drive to the western slope of the Panama Canal, and pay a visit to the Spanish Castle of San Lorenzo (UNESCO) for have a glimpse of the mouth of the Chagres river, an important cross point during the transportation of gold, silver and other goods, between the colonies and Europe, from the 16th and up to the 18th century.

Day 5. The Best of Soberania National Park

Our guide will pick you up early at your hotel and will drive you to the town of Gamboa, located right on the shore of the Panama Canal. Once there, you will be able to enjoy nature first hand as you go on a 3 hour hike through one of the most important natural reserves of the Panama Canal watershed. The almost 20,000 hectares of Soberanía National Park are home to a great variety of mammals, birds and reptiles, and our experienced guides know exactly where to look for them.

After the hike, we will take you to the local marina, where you will embark on a 1 hour boat ride on Gatun Lake and navigate next to the giant Panamax vessels that transit the Panama Canal. Our captain will take you to different areas of the lake in search of wildlife, as our guide points out and interprets the plants, birds and animals visible from this new perspective of our rainforest. 

Upon your return to the marina you will enjoy delicious lunch, with amazing views of the ships navigating the Panama Canal, before you head back to your hotel.

Day 6. Transfer to International Airport

At the appropriate time a Dynamo Travel representative will pick you up at your hotel to take you to the international airport of Tocumen for your flight back home.
